[OTT뉴스=이희영 OTT 평론가] '고요의 바다'(Sea of Tranquility, Mare Tranquillitatis)는 '달의 바다'의 일종이다.

주변에 비해 어둡고 평탄한 이 지대는 인류가 최초로 발을 디딘 월면이기도 하다.

바다라는 이름과 달리 달의 바다에는 물이 없다.

갈릴레이가 망원경으로 이 구역을 보고 물이 있을 것이라 여겨 '달의 바다'라는 이름을 붙였다고 한다.

이러한 달의 바다처럼, 지난 24일 공개된 넷플릭스 드라마 <고요의 바다> 속 지구의 바다에도 물이 존재하지 않는다.

근미래 배경의 작중 지구는 심각한 물 부족 문제에 시달리고 있다.

세계적인 사막화로 강과 바다는 모두 바닥을 보였고, 오염된 식수 섭취로 영아 사망률은 그만큼 상승했다.

이에 따라 대한민국은 국민에게 식수를 배급하기 시작했다.

배정받은 등급에 따라 배급량이 달라지는 '식수 등급제'가 연일 사회적 논란을 빚고 있는 배경에서 이야기는 시작된다.

주인공 송지안(배두나 분)은 원하는 만큼 물을 배급받을 수 있는 '골드' 등급이다.

5년 전 언니 원경(강말금 분)이 사망한 후 국가로부터 받은 보상이다.

그로부터 5년이 지난 후 그는 언니가 있던 그곳으로 떠난다. 바로 달의 발해기지다.

발해기지의 기밀 샘플이자 대원들의 임무 목표였던 '월수(月水)'는 지구의 물 부족 문제를 단숨에 해결할 수 있는 희망으로 보였다.

생명체에 반응해 무한대로 증식하는 속성을 띠고 있었기 때문이다.

하지만 그 속성 때문에 월수에 감염된 인간은 모두 체내의 물을 쏟아내며 익사하고 말았다.

5년 전 수석연구원 원경을 포함한 발해기지의 연구원들은 이 월수를 활용하기 위해 비윤리적인 복제인간 생체 실험을 감행했다.

이 실험으로 수십 명의 실험체가 사망했고, 그 시체들은 포대에 싸여 정육점의 고기처럼 기지 내 어딘가에 나란히 걸려 방치되었다.

생명을 숙주로 무한히 불어나는 이 월수는 인간의 욕심과도 닮았다.

대원의 사인을 밝히는 것보다 타국의 눈을 피해 샘플을 가져오는 것이 우선인 최 국장(길해연 분)처럼.

다국적 기업 RX의 스파이로 파견되어, 대원들의 분위기를 해치고 샘플을 빼돌리려던 이기수(최영우 분)처럼.

월수를 위해 다른 대원을 살해한 또 다른 스파이 류태석(이준 분)처럼.

그리고 인류를 위한다는 마음으로 범죄를 자행한 발해기지 연구원들처럼 말이다.

지구에 있는 최국장을 제외한 이들은 모두 죽었다.

인류가 그토록 찾아 헤매던 물이 이들을 죽음으로 몰아넣는 원인으로 변모한 것이다.

<고요의 바다>는 이러한 모순을 다룬다.

극도로 부족했던, 그리고 생명의 원천이던 물이 폭발적으로 불어나 생명을 앗아갔다.

인류를 구하고자 지시한 임무가 연구원들과 대원들의 죽음에 앞섰으며, 수많은 복제인간을 죽음으로 몰아넣었다.

사람들의 죽음을 방관한 죄책감에 고통받는 인물이 동료 대원을 아무렇지 않게 죽였다.

그러나 긍정적인 모순 역시 존재한다.

드라마의 배경인 달은 의문의 공간이다.

미지의 비밀이 숨겨진 이곳은 그 자체로 공포를 유발한다.

그러나 그 비밀의 한가운데에는 익숙한 감각으로부터의 희망이 있다.

대원들을 위협하고 심지어 살해하기까지 한 루나-073(김시아 분)은 월수에 적응한 존재임이 밝혀졌다.

루나가 지안을 깨물며 생긴 상처는 그가 월수 감염으로부터 살아남는 항체가 됐다.

그리고 그는 지안에게는 언니를, 윤재(공유 분)에게는 딸을 떠올리게 하며 이들에게 삶의 의미를 되새겼다.

'고요의 바다'는 두 가지 의미를 품고 있다.

하나는 월수에 감염된 이들이 빠져 사망하는 바다다.

그들이 가라앉은, 그들 몸속의 바다는 그저 고요하다.

작품 말미에 발해기지 문을 뚫고 엄청난 양의 월수가 외부로 분출될 때도 기지 밖으로는 아무 소리가 나지 않는다.

발해기지 안에서 일어난 일들 역시 모두 기지의 밖으로 새어 나가지 않는다.

수십 명의 루나가 빠져 죽은 바다 역시 온통 고요했던 것이다.

그리고 또 다른 하나는 원경이 지안에게 보여주고 싶어 한 바다다.

자매는 어린 시절 지구에서 함께 올려다보며 이야기를 나누던 '고요의 바다'에 발을 디뎠다.

그리고 그곳에서야 겨우 재회한다.

바닷속에 잠긴 듯 침체된 표정으로 하루하루를 이어나가던 지안은 달에 도착한 이후 감정을 표현할 수 있게 된다.

그곳에서 루나-073, 그리고 언니를 만난 이후다.

<고요의 바다>는 침묵 속에 가려진 비명을 이야기하고, 이를 직면하는 고통에서 피어나는 새로운 희망을 말한다.

지안은 월수 샘플과 루나를 국제 우주 연구소로 데려가기로 한다.

철저히 중립적인 곳이기에 누구도 이득을 독점할 수 없기 때문이다.

그렇게 지안과 가영(김선영 분), 그리고 루나를 태운 구조선은 다시 날아오른다.

안전한 연구 아래 인류가 물 부족으로부터 해방될 수 있다는 희망을 안고.

沈黙の中の悲鳴、苦しみの希望 - <静かなる海>

'静かなる海' (Sea of​​ Tranquility, Mare Tranquillitatis)は'月の海'の一種である。

周辺に比べて暗く平坦なこの地帯は、人類が最初に足を踏み入れた月面でもある。

海という名前とは異なり、月の海には水がない。

ガリレーが望遠鏡でこの区域を見て水があると考え、「月の海」という名前をつけたという。

この月の海のように、去る24日公開されたネットフリックスドラマ<静かなる海>の中、地球の海にも水が存在しない。

近未来の背景の作中地球は深刻な水不足問題に苦しんでいる。

世界的な砂漠化で川と海はいずれも底を見せ、汚染された飲料水の摂取で幼児死亡率はそれだけ上昇した。

これにより大韓民国は国民に飲料水を配給し始めた。

配分された等級によって配給量が変わる「飲料水等級制」が連日社会的議論をおさめている背景から話は始まる。

主人公ソン・ジアン（ペ・ドゥナ）は、好きなだけ水を配給できる「ゴールド」等級だ。

５年前、姉の元警（強末金）が死亡した後、国家から受けた補償だ。

それから5年が過ぎた後、彼は姉がいたそこに去る。まさに月の渤海基地だ。

渤海基地の機密サンプルであり、隊員の任務目標だった「月水」は、地球の水不足問題を一気に解決できる希望と見られた。

生命体に反応して無限に増殖する属性を帯びていたからだ。

だが、その属性のため、月水に感染した人間はすべて体内の水を注ぎ出して溺死してしまった。

5年前、シニア研究員の遠征を含む渤海基地の研究者らは、この月数を活用するために非倫理的な複製人間生体実験を敢行した。

この実験で数十人の実験体が死亡し、その死体は砲台に包まれ、肉屋の肉のように基地内のどこかに並んでいた。

生命を宿主に無限に吹き飛ばすこの月水は、人間の貪欲にも似ていた。

隊員のサインを明らかにするより他国の目を避けてサンプルを持ってくるのが優先であるチェ・グァンジャン（ギルヘヨン）のように。

多国籍企業RXのスパイで派遣され、隊員たちの雰囲気を損なってサンプルを取り除こうとしたイ・ギス（チェ・ヨンウ）のように。

月水のために他の隊員を殺害したもう一つのスパイリュ・テソク（イ・ジュン）のように。

そして人類のために、犯罪を犯した渤海基地研究員らのようだ。

地球の最国長を除いた彼らはすべて死んだ。

人類がそのように探して迷っていた水が彼らを死に追い込む原因に変貌したのだ。

<静かなる海>はこのような矛盾を扱う。

極度に不足していた、そして生命の源泉だった水が爆発的に吹き、命を奪った。

人類を救おうと指示した任務が研究員たちと隊員たちの死に先立ち、数多くの複製人​​間を死に追いやった。

人々の死を傍観した罪悪感に苦しむ人物が仲間隊員をさりげなく殺した。

しかし肯定的な矛盾も存在する。

ドラマの背景である月は疑問の空間だ。

未知の秘密が隠されたここは、それ自体で恐怖を誘発する。

しかし、その秘密の真ん中にはおなじみの感覚からの希望がある。

隊員を脅かし、さらに殺害するまでしたルナ-073（キムシア）は月水に適応した存在であることが明らかになった。

ルナが地眼を壊して生じた傷は、彼が月水感染から生き残る抗体となった。

そして彼は知安には姉を、ユンジェ（共有）には娘を思い出させ、彼らに人生の意味を蘇った。

'静かなる海'は二つの意味を抱いている。

一つは月水に感染した人々が抜けて死亡する海だ。

彼らが沈んだ、彼らの体の中の海はただ静かです。

作品の末尾に渤海基地のドアを開け、膨大な量の月水が外部に噴出される時も基地外では何の声も出ない。

渤海基地の中で起こったことも、すべて基地の外に漏れていない。

数十人のルナが抜けて死んだ海もやはり穏やかだったのだ。

そしてもう一つは遠景がジアンに見せたい海だ。

姉妹は幼い頃、地球から一緒に見上げて話を交わした「静かなる海」に足を踏み入れた。

そしてそこでやっと再会する。

海の中に沈んだように沈滞した表情で一日一日を続けていたジアンは、月に到着した後の感情を表現できるようになる。

そこでルナ-073、そして姉に会った後だ。

<静かなる海>は沈黙の中に隠された悲鳴を語り、これに直面する苦痛から咲く新たな希望を語る。

ジアンは月水サンプルとルナを国際宇宙研究所に連れて行くことにする。

徹底的に中立的な場所だから誰も利得を独占できないからだ。

そうジアンとカヨン（キム・ソンヨン）、そしてルナを燃やした救助船は再び飛び上がる。

安全な研究の下で、人類が水不足から解放される可能性があることを願っています。

Five years later, he leaves for the place where her sister was. It's the moon's balhae base.

'Wolsu', a secret sample of the Balhae base and the mission goal of the crew, seemed to be a hope that could solve the earth's water shortage problem at once.

This is because it has the property of infinitely multiplying in response to living things.

However, due to its properties, all humans infected with Moonsu drowned by pouring out water from their bodies.

Five years ago, researchers at the Balhae base, including senior researcher Wonkyung, conducted unethical experiments on clones in vivo to utilize this moon water.

Dozens of subjects died as a result of this experiment, and their bodies were wrapped in sacks and left hanging side by side, like meat from a butcher's shop.

This moon, which grows infinitely with life as a host, resembles human greed.

Like Director Choi (Gil Hae-yeon), who prefers to get samples while avoiding the eyes of other countries rather than revealing the cause of the crew.

Like Lee Ki-soo (Choi Young-woo), who was sent as a spy for RX, a multinational corporation, to harm the crew and steal samples.

Just like another spy, Ryu Tae-seok (Lee Joon), who killed another crew member for Wol-su.

And just like the researchers at the Balhae base who committed crimes for the sake of humanity.

All but Chief Choi on Earth are dead.

The water that mankind has been searching for so much has turned into a cause that drives them to death.

<The Silent Sea> deals with this contradiction.

Water, which was extremely scarce and the source of life, exploded and took lives.

The mission ordered to save humanity preceded the deaths of researchers and crew, and resulted in the death of numerous clones.

A character suffering from the guilt of neglecting people's deaths casually killed a fellow crew member.

But there are also positive contradictions.

The moon, the background of the drama, is a mysterious space.

This place where an unknown secret is hidden in itself causes fear.

But at the heart of the secret lies hope from a familiar sense.

Luna-073 (Kim Shia), who threatened and even killed the crew, turned out to be a creature adapted to Wolsu.

The wounds caused by Luna biting Jian became the antibodies that he survived from the Wolsu infection.

And he reminded Ji-an of her older sister and Yoon-jae (Gong Yoo) of her daughter, reminding them of the meaning of life.

'The Silent Sea' has two meanings.

One is the sea where those infected with the moon water drown and die.

The sea they have sunk into is just still.

At the end of the work, even when a huge amount of moon water gushes out through the door of the Balhae base, there is no sound outside the base.

Everything that happened inside the Balhae base does not leak out of the base either.

The sea where dozens of Luna drowned and died was also quiet.

And the other one is the sea that Wonkyung wanted to show Jian.

The sisters set foot on the 'The Silent Sea', where they looked up and talked together on Earth when they were young.

And only there, we meet again.

Ji-an, who continued each day with a depressed expression as if submerged in the sea, is able to express her emotions after arriving on the moon.

There she met Luna-073 and her older sister.

<The Silent Sea> tells the story of a scream hidden in silence, and a new hope that emerges from the pain of facing it.

Jian decides to take the moon water sample and Luna to the International Space Research Center.

Because it is a completely neutral place, no one can monopolize the profits.

In that way, the rescue boat carrying Ji-an, Ga-young (Kim Seon-young), and Luna takes off again.

With the hope that under safe research, mankind can be freed from water scarcity.
